The Sky Is Falling. You should see it!

I can’t say that I have ever been “in to” astronomy, but after seeing the the largest full moon of the year (June 23rd) from an vantage point above the city, I’ve been looking up a bit more. When I read about the Perseid Meteor Shower coming in August I started making plans to be somewhere free of city lights to see this annual event.120813083937-perseid-meteor-shower-irpt-story-top

Beginning in mid-July each year, with the peak of activity coming between the 9th and 14th of August, this should be one spectacular light show. I read that the 11th & 12th of August should be peak viewing. It’s possible to see 50 or more meteors in an hour.

I found some great photos of last years shower here at Space.com and you can read more about the event there or on Earthsky.org.
